SHUL REVIEW: Kol Rina / The Bomb Shelter Shul (Friday and Saturday Morning)

Rating: 5/5 — A beautifully sung Carlebach service that gave me chills more than once.

Kol Rina is an Orthodox synagogue located in Jerusalem’s Nachlaot neighborhood. Services are Friday nights and Saturday mornings at 8:30am–11:15am. The mechitza is positioned behind the men’s section, located at 26 Be’er Sheva Street.

Friday Night: Services draw large crowds eager to sing and dance using Carlebach melodies. Great energy, and great way to bring in Shabbat.

Saturday Morning: This reconnected me with a beloved shul from my 2008 high school experience in Israel. Participants joined in such a way that I felt like I was part of a live choir, with spontaneous harmonies.

Simchat Torah: Extensive singing, dancing, and multiple hakafot. Women received Torah scrolls to dance with during hakafot.

For those seeking Carlebach, singing, and harmony, Kol Rina is Jerusalem’s finest weekly Shabbat minyan experience.
